Home Insurance

How much can you save?

Your home is likely your most valuable asset, and for a family it provides more than just financial value.  Protecting your home involves many steps, and some of these steps include the prudent use of safety measures such as smoke alarms, security systems and good overall maintenance.  One of the most valuable tools you have to protect your home financially is a comprehensive homeowner’s insurance policy.

A homeowner’s policy has several different sections of coverage.  The first part of a homeowner’s policy is designed to pay for damage to the things you own, such as the building and all of the contents inside the home.

Your Building and Contents

Your building can be covered for full replacement cost value, or it can be covered for Actual Cash Value, which means that the insurance company will apply depreciation before making a settlement on your claim.  The proper valuation of your property and adequate insurance is critical in order for you to obtain the most value from your homeowner’s policy.

Your contents can also be insured for replacement cost value, and this is an important consideration when you consider that most people under value the full cost of the personal property they have within their home.  Furnishings, clothing, electronics such as computers and entertainment systems, and even appliances like your washer and dryer are all covered under the personal property section of your policy.

You will need to make a decision on the size of your deductible when you purchase a homeowners policy.  The deductible is the amount that you must pay toward any damage claims before the insurance company will pay, and you can select the size of the deductible you need.  A lower deductible will mean that your policy will cost more than, if you maintain a high deductible so keep this in mind when making your decision.

Liability Claims

A homeowners policy also provides liability coverage to protect you from claims of negligence that might be made against you if someone is injured by you, or if you cause damage to someone else’s property.  This valuable component of your policy will pay for the legal costs of defending you if you are sued, and it will pay for the cost of any settlements that may need to be made on your behalf.
